How Summit Transportation got built on the eastern edge of KC
Wyatt Marshall grew up between Raytown and Lee’s Summit, in the band of suburbs the rest of the country usually misses when it pictures Kansas City. He spent summers in high school loading boxes at one of the bigger KC van lines off Blue Parkway, kept the job through college, and never really left the trade. By his late twenties he was running crews of his own, then driving routes out to Chicago and St. Louis on the bigger flatbeds. What he kept running into was the same gap between the phone quote and the final invoice — the kind of jump that ruins a customer’s day and a moving company’s name.
In 2014 he put a deposit on a single 26-foot box truck, rented a small lot off Independence Avenue, and went out on his own. The promise on the first batch of business cards is the same one we still keep: the written estimate is what you pay, the crew that loads in Lee’s Summit is the crew that unloads at the door, and the truck has Summit on the side. Twelve years later the yard holds eight trucks, including a tractor that Wyatt and Tyrone use for the long midwest hauls.

Hannah Beck has been answering the office phone and running the calendar since 2018; she is usually the first voice you hear. Megan Reilly walks the estimates and writes the binding quotes. Cody Whitcomb coordinates the long-distance lanes — what loads when, who drives, where it unloads. Brandon Hesse leads the KC east local crews on most of the in-town jobs around Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, and Independence, and Tyrone Boyd takes the long-haul tractor out for the St. Louis, Chicago, and Omaha runs. Wyatt is on a job most days; he prefers it that way.
